Muharram 1448 · The Day of Ashura

A day of rescue, a day of remembrance

On the tenth of Muharram — the day of Ashura — Allah delivered Musa, peace be upon him, and his people from Pharaoh: the sea was parted, and a people cornered against the water were given a way through. Our Prophet ﷺ fasted this day in gratitude and encouraged us to fast it, that we might remember Allah is the One who lifts His servants out of every depth.

“Fasting the day of Ashura — I hope by it Allah will expiate the year that came before.” — Sahih Muslim

It is also the day we remember Husayn ibn Ali — grandson of the Prophet ﷺ, son of Fatima — who at Karbala chose to stand for what is right rather than bow to injustice, and was martyred with his family and companions. So Ashura carries both currents at once: gratitude for deliverance, and grief at the price of standing firm.

As we move through this blessed month, let us keep the whole Ummah in our du'a and our sadaqa — not in fear, but in remembrance, and in quiet trust in the One who parts every sea. 🌙
